Congratulations to Jaman Mahamud, a rising first-year college student and REquipment Inc.’s 2026 Jennifer Baker Scholar.

This fall, Jaman will attend Columbia University with an interest in studying biomedical engineering. He is one of REquipment’s youngest recipients of the Jennifer Baker Scholarship, yet his passion for assistive technology (AT) and durable medical equipment (DME), along with his long-term ambitions, are already well established.

Jaman is a co-founder of Manus Nova Prosthetics, a student-led initiative at The Bronx High School of Science that designs and distributes 3D-printed prosthetics for people who need them.

“We are creating upper-limb prosthetics to send to Guatemala and Ecuador, where there is a lack of prosthetics that make people’s lives much more accessible,” Jaman wrote in his scholarship application.Manus Nova recently assembled its first device and will soon receive patient feedback that will help guide future designs.

“The fact that it may reach the life of a person in need thousands of kilometers away means the world to me,” Jaman wrote.

REquipment was especially drawn to Jaman’s application because of his personal connection to DME. He shared how durable medical equipment contributed to his grandfather’s stability and well-being while living with a heart condition. Just as important are Jaman’s hopes to incorporate equipment reuse into his future work as a biomedical engineer.

“Many people who need assistive devices cannot afford replacements every time they outgrow or potentially damage one,” he wrote. “This is especially true for growing children, whose prosthetic needs can change drastically over time. Because of that, I want to expand Manus Nova from an initiative into an organization that ships free 3D-printed upper-limb devices while also creating a no-cost repair and swap system for children.”

Congratulations, Jaman! REquipment is proud to support your vision, energy, and passion, and we look forward to seeing the impact you make in the years ahead.

The Jennifer Baker Scholarship was established in 2022 by the REquipment, Inc. Board of Directors to honor former Program Director Jennifer Baker. Jennifer Baker was an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) with a Ph.D. in Psychology. She prized lifelong learning.
