Finding the right home medical equipment shouldn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Whether you need a wheelchair for a family member, a shower chair to make daily routines safer, or assistive technology to support greater independence, REquipment helps Massachusetts residents access gently used, refurbished medical equipment at no cost.

Through its statewide equipment reuse program, REquipment provides durable medical equipment (DME) and assistive technology (AT) to people of all ages. This includes older adults, individuals with disabilities, and people recovering from injuries or illness.

And getting started may be easier than you think. You don’t need a doctor’s prescription, proof of insurance denial, or a referral to request equipment.

Here’s who qualifies and how to find available equipment, submit a request, and arrange to receive the device you need.

Who Qualifies for Free Medical Equipment Through REquipment?

REquipment serves Massachusetts residents of all ages who need durable medical equipment or assistive technology.

The program supports people with a wide range of circumstances, including individuals who:

  • Have a disability or ongoing mobility needs
  • Are recovering from surgery, an accident, or an illness
  • Need equipment temporarily while their primary device undergoes repairs
  • Have limited insurance coverage or cannot afford new equipment
  • Need assistive technology to support communication, independence, or daily activities

No doctor’s prescription, referral, or proof of insurance denial is required to request equipment.

Step 1: Search REquipment’s Available Medical Equipment

REquipment operates two websites, each serving a different purpose:

  • dmereuse.org is REquipment’s main website, where you can learn about the program, find resources, and read stories about the people it serves.
  • requipmentma.org is the equipment inventory and request website, where you can browse available devices and submit a request.

To get started, go directly to the Search Equipment page.

From there, you can browse frequently requested equipment categories or select “Search all categories” to explore the full inventory. You can also search by keyword and use available filters to narrow your results.

Depending on availability, you may find equipment such as:

  • Manual and power wheelchairs
  • Rollators and mobility aids
  • Shower chairs and bath benches
  • Adapted strollers and gait trainers
  • Standing frames and other supportive equipment
  • Communication devices and other assistive technology

REquipment cleans, sanitizes, and refurbishes donated devices before making them available for reuse.

Helpful tip: Inventory changes regularly as REquipment receives, refurbishes, and distributes equipment. Therefore, if you don’t see what you need today, check back periodically.

Step 2: Select the Equipment You Need

Once you find an item that may meet your needs, click on its listing to review the equipment details.

Before requesting a device, make sure it’s appropriate for the person who will use it. Depending on the equipment, important considerations may include dimensions, weight capacity, mobility requirements, and other specifications.

For specialized equipment, such as a power wheelchair, scooter, or standing frame, REquipment recommends consulting a medical professional if you’ve never used that type of device before.

When you’re ready to proceed, select the “Request this item” option on the equipment listing.

This will begin the request process.

Step 3: Complete the Equipment Request Form

After selecting your equipment, you’ll need to complete an online intake form.

Important: Enter the information of the person who will receive and use the equipment, even if a family member, caregiver, or other individual is helping submit the request. The form also includes fields for a separate contact person.

Next, provide the relevant contact and equipment-user information. You’ll also need to answer questions about the reason for your request and your delivery preference.

Once you submit the form, here’s what happens:

  1. REquipment removes the requested item from the available online inventory.
  2. A unique Request ID number appears on your screen.
  3. The REquipment team reviews your request and follows up with next steps.

Be sure to save your Request ID number. You may need it if you contact REquipment with questions about your request.

Keep in mind that submitting the form does not mean REquipment has approved your request. Once the team approves it, you’ll receive further instructions by email or postal mail. If the team needs additional information, someone may contact you by phone or email.

Step 4: Arrange Pickup or Delivery

Once REquipment approves your request, the team will provide instructions for receiving your device.

First, you’ll need to sign and return a Liability Release Form before arranging pickup or delivery.

REquipment offers several ways to receive equipment, depending on your needs and the type of device you request.

Equipment pickup

You can often pick up approved equipment within a few days after completing the required paperwork. REquipment will confirm pickup arrangements and locations with you.

Pickup is free.

Equipment delivery

If you cannot pick up your equipment, REquipment offers delivery throughout Massachusetts.

The program charges a $20 delivery fee to help cover transportation costs. However, REquipment may waive this fee in cases of financial hardship.

Delivery can take two or more weeks, depending on scheduling and availability. In addition, delivery locations must be accessible because drivers cannot carry heavy equipment up or down stairs.

Shipping smaller devices

For some smaller items, REquipment also offers shipping for a flat $20 fee at the recipient’s request and expense.

The REquipment team can help clarify the available options for your particular device.

Ready to Find the Equipment You Need?

Access to the right equipment can make a meaningful difference in someone’s daily life. For example, the right device may help someone move around more comfortably, complete everyday tasks safely, or participate more fully in school, work, and community activities.

Through its equipment reuse program, REquipment gives gently used medical equipment a second life while helping Massachusetts residents access the devices they need.
